Description
Description | The Trans-Saharan Highway (TSH) project is one of the priority projects of the Infrastructure Development Programme in Africa (PAP-PIDA). The project targets: (i) the development and asphalting of the missing segments of the main road and the Chad branch of the TSH, over a total length of 565 km; (ii) the construction of a 543-metre bridge over the Niger River at Farié with 3 km of access roads; and (iii) the construction of infrastructure to facilitate transport and transit at the Algerian/Niger and Niger/Chad borders. The TSH is strategic for Niger and Chad, with a view to improving their external and internal accessibility. Project implementation progress is fairly satisfactory in both countries. In Niger, works on the two lots of the Arlit-Assamaka section (225 km) are 72% and 78% complete respectively, while the bridge at Farie is over 80% complete. Related works are almost done. With the exception of the the Liwa-RigRig stretch (53 km where no financing has been received), progress on the other road sections is steady, with rates of 100% for the Massakory-Ngouri section (85 km), 37.88% for the Ngouri-Bol section (100 km) and nearly 38% for the RigRig-Daboua-Niger border section. This gives a consolidated rate of around 48%. This supplementary financing will contribute to the completion of works on the RigRig-Daboua-Niger border section and the development of the so-far-unfinanced Liwa-RigRig section, thereby completing the funding required for the work on this important corridor in Chad. The updated cost, net of taxes and customs duties, of the supplementary financing in Chad is estimated at UA 76.88 million, equivalent to CFAF 59.73 billion. The implementation of the entire programme will span an estimated period of thirty (30) months, from January 2022 to June 2024. |
