Description
Description | "QS World University 2021 rankings names the University of California Berkeley (UCB) the leading public university in the US and 4th in the world. Critical to UCB's continued success is the 30-year plus legacy of top Europe focused teaching and research at the Institute of European Studies (IES) and its Jean Monnet Center of Excellence (JMCE). Given its unique advantages and its proximity to Silicon Valley, the University of California Berkeley (UCB) is well positioned to launch ground-breaking research within its framework of the Global EU. The ""Global EU' approach recognizes the EU as a crucial world actor, capable of profound impact on the world economy, society and security. Our new program of research and education in the ""Global EU"" framework for 2021-2024 is titled, ""Challenges and Responses: Innovations in EU policies on the Economy, Environment and Society"" comprising 6 work packages (WP). WP1 will improve JMCE network ties across North America through a joint lecture series, a book panel at the 2022 EU Studies Association meeting (Dewulf, Newsome, Pennington). WP2 through 6 feature new research, public events and a minimum of 5 publications total by Berkeley faculty on EU anti-trust law (Linos), EU anti discrimination policy (Oppenheimer), EU competition law (Gadinis), flood risk management in the EU and US (Serra-Llobet) and border surveillance in the EU (Bevir). This proposal thus meets the objectives of developing faculty and student expertise on the EU's global role and dissemination of that expertise. All WPs include public events as activities that deepen linkages with European universities. With primary outputs of formal and informal publications, we increase our impact among a broad population by increasing their knowledge of the EU. Our main indicator of success is the number of participants reached by both our events and publications, for which we have a baseline of 0 for all participants types and an overall minimum target of 1000." |
