Description | The Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) is a hydropower transmission line project designed to bring electricity generated in Canada down to New York City. The project involves dual cables running from near the U.S.-Canadian border, through Lake Champlain, along and under the Hudson River, ending in a converter station in Astoria, Queens. It required numerous state and federal permits and environmental impact assessments along its 339-mile international route. The project is part of New York's green energy plans and is integral to the state's Climate Leadership & Protection Act. Construction started in September 2023 and is expected to be completed and operational by 2026. |
