Description
Description | The Char Dham Yatra project is an Uttarakhand government initiative to construct a 900-km, all-weather highway connecting the four holy Hindu shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The project aims to improve connectivity for religious tourism and facilitate troop movement near the China border. It has faced environmental concerns due to unscientific hill cutting, muck dumping, deforestation, and river damage in the fragile Himalayan region. The project has caused ecological damage including landslides, river degradation, deforestation, glacial melt, and ground subsidence. The project is partially completed with about 75% of the highway construction done by late 2024, aiming for full completion by 2026, but has faced delays due to land acquisition, forest clearances, and contractual issues. |
