Description | The Charles River Conservancy installed a 730-square-foot floating wetland in 2020 to improve water quality and restore biodiversity. The floating wetland serves as a hydroponic growing mat planted with over 3,000 native wetland species and acts as a feeding ground for zooplankton to help control toxic algae blooms. The wetland is towed away for winter storage at the MIT Sailing Pavilion to protect its roots from freezing and is planned to be redeployed in mid-March. The Conservancy hopes to expand the use of floating wetlands to 10,000 square feet in the future. |
