Description | The Charleston Harbor Deepening Project was a roughly 12-year-long plan to deepen the harbor from 45 feet to 52 feet, making it the deepest harbor along the East Coast. The project involved planning and dredging, totaling $580 million in costs. The added depth allows ships of all sizes to come through at any tide and during all hours of the day. Construction wrapped up in late 2022, and the final federal reimbursement of $21.28 million has been disbursed to the ports. The project was supported by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and the South Carolina Ports Authority. The port is now looking to make a 52-foot-deep channel to the North Charleston terminal, with a feasibility study requested as the first step. |
