The dam is owned by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, while the adjoining hydropower plant is owned by Hom Paper XI LLC. The hydro plant has been offline since 2023 due to a fire and subsequent legal disputes. Federal officials have ordered repairs and restoration of the powerhouse, but the owner has delayed action while negotiating a sale to HydroMine Cheboygan LLC. State officials are currently working to restart the powerhouse to prevent dam failure amid rising water levels. |
