Description
Description | The Democratic Republic of Congo has approved the sale of copper and cobalt producer Chemaf to US-based Virtus Minerals. The deal involves a $30 million payment and the assumption of significant debt by Virtus Minerals. The transaction supports a broader US strategy to secure critical minerals from Africa and marks a shift away from Chinese dominance in Congo's mining sector. Chemaf operates the Mutoshi and Etoile mines, which are near-term sources of copper and cobalt supply. The approval clears the way for the completion of a share purchase agreement signed earlier in 2026. |
