Description | The Chenab Bridge is the world's highest railway bridge, located across the Chenab River in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a key part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. The bridge stands at a height of 359 metres above the river, with a total length of 1,315 metres. It was constructed using around 30,000 metric tonnes of specially designed steel to withstand earthquakes and extreme weather conditions, including wind speeds up to 260 km/h. The bridge is designed to last 120 years and is coated with a special paint that protects it from corrosion for 15 years. The project aims to improve connectivity to the Kashmir Valley, making travel faster, safer, and more reliable, while boosting tourism and supporting the local economy. The Vande Bharat trains will reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar to around three hours. The project has been in development for over two decades and is considered one of India's most challenging railway projects. |
