Description | The Chenab Bridge is the world's tallest railway arch bridge, connecting two hills between Katra and Qazigund as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link. It stands 359 metres above the riverbed, 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower, and spans 1,315 metres. The bridge was planned starting in 2005 and completed in 2022, with trial runs conducted. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) served as the consultant for slope stabilization and foundation, while foreign firms were involved in making the steel arch. The project involved complex engineering challenges including slope stabilization, foundation construction in a high seismic zone, and wind-resistant design to withstand winds up to 220 kmph. The project cost was Rs 1,486 crore. |
