The Chenab Railway Bridge is a railway bridge constructed over the Chenab river in the Himalayas. It is the world's highest railway bridge, situated at a height of 359 metres above the river, 35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower. The project faced challenges such as access to the site through steep slopes, initially using horses and mules, and later constructing temporary roads. The bridge was constructed using the world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and specialized heavy machinery, with massive consolidation grouting to stabilize the slopes. The arch was erected using cantilever construction technique, with the arch meeting at the crown on April 5, 2021. The viaduct construction involved incremental launching on a transition curve and longitudinal gradient, a first for Indian Railways. A NABL accredited laboratory was set up for quality monitoring at every stage. The bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025.
