Description | Dominion Energy plans to build a 944-megawatt natural gas power plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia, known as the Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC). The plant is designed as a peaker plant to provide electricity during peak demand periods and augment renewable energy sources. The project was approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) but is currently on hold as the SCC reconsiders a petition from opponents raising concerns about health impacts, costs, and necessity of the plant. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has approved an air permit for the plant. The plant is projected to be operational by June 1, 2029, with an estimated cost of $1.47 billion. |
