Description
Description | The project will result in improved capacity and quality of pathways and/or active transportation infrastructure in Ottawa. The project involves constructing new active transportation infrastructure leading up to, and across, the Prince of Wales Bridge in Ottawa, Ontario. The addition of a timber deck on both the north and the south segments of the out-of-service rail bridge, as well as the construction of multi-use path segments linking the north and south segments of the bridge across Lemieux Island and linking to existing active transportation networks on either side of the bridge, will create a multiuse active transportation connection between Ottawa and Gatineau. Work will also be undertaken to rehabilitate the deteriorated structure, substructure and superstructure of the bridge. The project scope includes: - Construction of a new elevated timber deck on top of rail track ties on both the south portion of the bridge (spanning from the Ottawa shore to Lemieux Island) and the north portion (structure spanning from Lemieux Island to the Gatineau shore); - Replacement of deteriorated rail track ties, installation of new timber encasements for track rails, and installation of a steel safety railing system; - Repairs to the bridge superstructure (floor beam replacement, rivet replacement with high-strength bolts, and portal frame angles replacement); - Rehabilitation of the bridge substructure; - Construction of three new multi-use path segments linking the south approach of the bridge to the City of Ottawa Trillium Pathway, linking the north and south bridge structures across Lemieux Island, and linking the north approach to the National Capital Commision (NCC) Voyageurs Pathway; - Installation of new lighting on the bridge and pathway; and - Installation of approximately 12 benches along the new pathway at the approaches and on Lemieux Island to comply with accessibility requirements. The project will result in improved capacity and quality of pathways and/or active transportation infrastructure in Ottawa. |
