Description

Description

"During 2022-2025 children's publishing house Liels un Mazs (LUM) will introduce Latvian readers to highly acclaimed literature from other European countries, taking an equal interest in the ""big"" and ""small"" languages and encouraging the translators to focus on the lesser-used ones. LUM will translate, publish and promote 5 high-quality European literary works from 3 lesser-used languages - Dutch, Swedish, Polish, and 2 big languages – French and German. All selected works offer wide versatility in forms and styles of literature for children: 1 picture book for early readers (5-8), 2 illustrated chapter books for fluent readers (7-10), 1 illustrated chapter book for young teenagers (10-14) and 1 illustrated novel for young adolescents (12+). 8 excerpts from Latvian books will be translated into ""big"" languages - English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and promoted at the Bologna and Frankfurt book fairs and online picture books' platform dPictus.com to ensure the possibilities for the works to be translated and published abroad. LUM will distribute and promote books by a diverse marketing strategy, including activities online: videos, online book readings, and posts on social media platforms, education materials as well as 'face-to-face' events, including authors' visits to schools and libraries, workshops, and discussions, promotion campaigns at bookstores. The implementation of the project will educate Latvian children and families, and people who work in the field of children's literature and reading promotion: teachers and kindergarten teachers, librarians, and broaden the availability and choice of high-quality literature representing the culture, art, and languages of different parts of Europe to children and will reach new groups of readers for whom high-quality books have been lacking in the Latvian market and continue to build the connection with the already existing."
