China’s Green Wall Project

China’s “Green Wall”, officially known as the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, is one of the world’s largest reforestation efforts. Launched in 1978, the project aims to prevent desert expansion, reduce dust storms, and address the impacts of climate change. It spans 3.9 million square kilometers across 13 provinces, covering about 42% of China’s land area. The project involves planting drought-resistant tree species to curb soil and water erosion, create jobs, and reduce rural-to-urban migration. By 2023, forest cover increased from 10% to 25%.
