China's 'Mother of All Dams' Hydropower Project on Yarlung Tsangpo

China plans to build a $168 billion hydropower system on the Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet, which will be the world's most powerful dam, three times more powerful than the Three Gorges Dam. The project includes a complex system of dams, reservoirs, and underground hydropower stations exploiting a 2,000-metre altitude drop at the Great Bend, with water diverted through tunnels and passed through a series of five cascade power stations. The dam is part of China's infrastructure expansion plan aimed at boosting energy supply and tightening control along the India border.
