Description

Description

Chinese-backed projects are transforming urban infrastructure in major African cities including Nairobi, Lagos, Addis Ababa, Kinshasa, Luanda, and Lusaka. These projects cover transport, social infrastructure such as housing, schools, and hospitals, as well as digital networks, electricity, water infrastructure, and government buildings. Between 2000 and 2021, Chinese lenders committed about $37 billion to urban infrastructure in these six cities, with a high completion rate and rapid project delivery. However, the projects are mostly financed and negotiated at the national government level, excluding municipal governments and local urban planners from decision-making processes.
