Description
Description | Between 2000 and 2021, Chinese lenders committed about $37 billion to urban infrastructure in six major African cities: Addis Ababa, Kinshasa, Lagos, Luanda, Lusaka, and Nairobi. These projects include transport infrastructure, social projects such as housing, schools, and hospitals, as well as digital networks, electricity systems, water infrastructure, and government buildings. The projects are mostly financed through loans provided by Chinese development banks, with a high completion rate and fast delivery. However, the projects are negotiated and funded through national ministries or state agencies, bypassing municipal governments, which limits local urban planners' involvement and fiscal autonomy of cities. |
