The Chinese Paper Umbrella is an architectural installation at the China Pavilion in Venice, designed by MAD. It reimagines the idea of shelter through tradition and technology, inspired by the traditional Chinese oil-paper umbrella. The structure uses xuan paper coated with tung oil, making it translucent and waterproof, and includes a misting system and smart dynamic lighting to adapt to the environment. It serves as an open-air space offering shade and protection from rain, reflecting on climate change and the degradation of architecture over time.
