Description

Description

Opportunity The Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine (CHUSJ) is a university affiliated hospital in Montréal specializing in health care for mothers, teenagers and children. In 2002, CHUSJ began raising funds to undertake the Growing Up Healthy (Grandir en santé) modernization project, which would ensure the hospital’s ability to meet the future needs of patients and their families as well retain the best physicians, researchers and students. In 2012 SNC-Lavalin was awarded the contract for the turnkey construction portion of the Growing Up Healthy project. Innovations The project was funded through a combination of public funding—the Province of Québec contributed $925 million to the Growing Up Healthy project—and philanthropy, with the Ste. Justine University Hospital Foundation contributing $70 million to the hospital’s redevelopment. Results The project resulted in a seven-storey, 43,269 square-metre specialized care building with various care units, an operating wing and a medical imaging department connected floor by floor to the existing hospital via footbridges. The new facilities house pediatric and surgery units with a combined capacity of 120 beds; a 14-room surgery wing with 11 operating theatres and three procedure rooms; 32 pediatric intensive and intermediate care beds; a high risk pregnancy unit, a 23-bed birth unit; and 80 intensive care beds in neonatology. In total the additions represent an increase of 65 per cent in the total area of the hospital. A second 27,518 square-metre building dedicated to research was also completed and includes a large windowed atrium, two auditoriums (125 and 250 seats) as well as a Thermal Power Plant and 1,200 parking spaces. The project was designed and constructed to target Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. The project was ranked 49th in AECOM’s Top 100 Projects of 2014.   “The Grandir en santé modernization project is the answer to meeting the ever-growing needs of our patients and their families, our doctors, our health care teams, our researchers and our students. This project is not only a construction and redesign project; it is also another way of working, by which teaching and research are integrated into the provision of health care services to patients.” Ghislaine Larocque,  President of the  Board, CHUSJ (2007-2011)
