Description | Chungmugong Yi Sunshin Class destroyers are in service with the Republic of Korea Navy. The multi-purpose destroyer clas Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) 200 4,800t 150m 17m 5m 29kt 4,000nm at 18kt SM-2 Block IIIB, RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAM), Harpoon ASM 1 x 5 inch (127mm) Mk-45 Mod 4 naval gun 1 x 30mm Goalkeeper close-in weapon system VLASROC; Torpedoes Raytheon AN/SPS-49(V)5 2D long range search radar, Thales Nederland MW08 G-band 3D target indication radar, STIR240 fire-control radars DSQS-21 hull mounted sonar, Daewoo towed array sonar Combined diesel or gas (CODOG) 2 x General Electric LM2500 gas turbines 2 x MTU Diesels 64,960shp Chungmugong Yi Sunshin Class destroyers are in service with the Republic of Korea Navy. The multi-purpose destroyer class was the second to be developed under the Korean Destroyer eXperimental (KDX) programme. Six ships were built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering between 2002 and 2006. The destroyer class is also known as DDH-II. The lead ship in its class, Chungmugong Yi Sunshin (DDH-975), was launched in May 2002 and commissioned in November 2003. Munmu the Great (DDH-976) was launched in April 2003 and commissioned in September 2004. Dae Jo Yeong (DDH-977) was launched in November 2003 and commissioned in June 2005. Wang Geon (DDH-978) was launched in May 2005 and commissioned in November 2006. Kang Gam Chan (DDH-979) was launched in March 2006 and commissioned in October 2007. The final ship in the class, Choi Young (DDH-981), was launched in October 2006 and commissioned in September 2008. Chungmugong Yi Sunshin Class uses improved sea-keeping hull design licensed from IABG of Germany. The hull incorporates stealth technology for reduced infrared and radar cross section. The ship has high survivability and can protect the crew from biochemical attacks. DDH-II Class has an overall length of 150m, a beam of 17m and a draft of 5m. The full load displacement of the ship is 4,800t. The vessel can complement a crew of 200 members. Chungmugong Yi Sunshin Class destroyers are deployed in reconnaissance and surveillance, anti-submarine, air and surface warfare operations. The destroyer conducts strikes on the strategic and tactical targets and can also serve as a main warship of a manoeuvre warfare group. The destroyer fleet improves the mission capability in the ocean by providing ship-centred long range anti-aircraft defence and zonal anti-aircraft defence. The combat management system is based on SSCS Mk 7 developed by Alenia Marconi Systems. The system integrates 10 multi-functional consoles and related infrastructure. The SSCS Mk 7 receives information from shipboard sensors and performs threat evaluation, target prioritisation, engagement planning and launching of weapons. The destroyer is armed with RIM-116 RAM anti-aircraft missiles and Harpoon anti-ship cruise missiles. A single 32-cell MK 41 vertical launch system (VLS) onboard can fire SM-2 Block IIIB surface-to-air missiles (SAM). The main gun fitted forward is a 127mm Mk 45 Mod 4 cannon. It has a rate of fire of 16 to 20 rounds a minute and a maximum range of 24km. The close-in air defence is provided by a 30mm Goalkeeper close-in weapon system (CIWS). Chungmugong Yi Sunshin Class is fitted with two triple 324mm anti-submarine torpedo tubes and vertical launchers for firing torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets (ASROC). The sensor suite includes a Raytheon AN/SPS-49(V)5 two-dimensional (2D) long- range search radar, a Thales Nederland MW08 G-band 3D target indication radar, two STIR240 fire-control radars, DSQs-21 hull mounted sonar and Daewoo towed array passive sonar. Electronic countermeasures are based on SONATA SLQ-200(V)K electronic warfare (EW) system developed by LIG Nex1. The shipborne EW system detects the radio wave signals emitted by the enemy radars and missiles and simultaneously transmits jamming signals to defeat multiple threats for enhancing the survivability of naval ships. The destroyer class has a landing space for an anti-submarine helicopter Super Lynx. The embarked helicopter is deployed in anti-submarine operations as well as ground operations. A hangar facility is provided for the helicopter. Chungmugong Yi Sunshin class is powered by combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion integrating two LM2500 gas turbines and two MTU diesel engines. The engines, driving two controllable pitch propellers, deliver a total power output of 64,960shp. The propulsion system provides a maximum speed of 29kt and a cruising range of 4,000nm at 18kt speed.
