Description

Description

Companhia de Gas do Amazonas (Cigas) was created in 1995 to distribute natural gas to 62 municipalities in the state of Amazonas. Cigas was established as a partnership of the state of Amazonas (17%) and the Brazilian company Manaus Gas S.A. (83%). Manaus Gas, a subsidiary of CS Participacoes (a company owned by a Brazilian investor), acquired the shares of Cigas for US$ 1.2 million (BRL 3.5 million) in a competitive bidding that took place in 2002. The 30-year concession contract was signed in November 2002, but operations commenced only in February 2010. Initially, the company supplied natural gas only to the Breitner Tombaqui thermal power plant, but, by 2012, its consumer base had increased to fourteen small consumers, seven thermal power plants, four industrial companies, 2 gas stations and one compressed natural gas company. In 2012, Cigas invested US$ 5.1 million (BRL 10 million) in expanding its network, and additional investment in infrastructure were underway as of 2012 with the goal to continue increase its consumer base.
