The key activities of the project are training that leads to skills development that responds to the current and future needs of the cross-border labour market. An important pervasive element is a close contact between teaching and research/development. Through needs-driven technical and applied research and development, new knowledge is developed in selected cross-border specialisation areas. The development of skills and knowledge supports innovations in both production processes and products as well as services and is demand-driven by systematically working with a clear user perspective. The new knowledge is quality-checked by national and international expertise and documented in such a way as to make them accessible to participants in training activities as well as to the general public, industry and the public sector. These activities are carried out in close connection with efforts to improve the dissemination of new technologies and knowledge. The project makes research results and other knowledge such as industry-specific competence expertise more easily accessible to companies in the border region. The large interface between academia and the company/public sector established annually through the students’ degree projects is a central communication route to companies for the project. The industrial doctoral students who work at the project’s higher education institutions and research institutes are also important communication channels. The project will also disseminate results and build contacts through regional cluster organisations, in particular Paper Province. The project’s contact area with companies is dominated by the forestry, construction and engineering industries as well as service providers such as consulting companies. BioSirk focuses on selected cross-border areas of strength, which include products and services directly or indirectly involved in the processing of wood raw materials, the central natural resource for the regional bioeconomy. BioSirk’s activities for the development of new knowledge are integrated into the skills development activities and have been organised in the following thematic areas: T. Competence Development: Wood for and in constructions, products and services Priority focus: Environmentally friendly use of wood-based materials, in particular building elements of wood, and pressing and compression of wood materials for use as materials in various products or as design techniques. Smart control of material handling for houses with wooden construction. Environmental assessment and choice of materials for wooden structures and products. Moisture in passive/zero-energy wooden housing. F. Competence Development: Packaging development — Design, characteristics, functions for sustainable development Priority specialisation: Packaging development, including packaging design with a consumer and environmental perspective, leading to packaging innovations based on consumer needs and promoting sustainable development. I. Competence Development: Lifecycle-optimised processes for value creation with wood materials Prioritised focus: Procurement of residues with wood fibre content. Minimising negative environmental impacts and streamlining the processes of recycling systems. Production technology for the optimal quality of the consumer. Competence support for innovation and business development in the wood field. All thematic areas of competence and knowledge include the development of systematic methods for practical realisation of principles of sustainable development in the form of product and service innovations. The user-oriented and needs-driven knowledge development includes testing and demonstration in collaboration with companies to the greatest extent possible. The priority thematic areas of competence and knowledge development overlap in order to promote synergies in the project. They seize opportunities to reach a greater critical mass through cross-border cooperation. They are based on established areas of strength and excellence in the participating regional higher education institutions and research institutes.
