The context of the future Life IP is the complex nexus between the legislative, the market, the organizational, and the behavioral challenges to waste management and the sustainable and lasting integration of circular economy into the waste hierarchy, in particular waste prevention. Presently, there are many obstacles for the integration of circular economy into waste handling. As regards to legislation, ambitions are high, but terminology and mechanisms are sometimes vague, leaving key stakeholders in a state of uncertainty. Regarding the market for circular products, the value chains and the market streams are not designed to optimize neither the re-use, recycling and recovery nor the prevention of waste, leading to the underperforming of the market in circular products. As regards to the day-to-day practice, there is a need for new behavioral and consumption patterns among citizens, industry and public authorities, based on capacity building in a broad sense. And, regarding organization of the sector, new partnerships among key stakeholders must be formed to underpin and engage in the efforts to reach the objective – the maximum prevention of waste. By focusing on the whole value chain and creating a circular framework in a profound way, the project aims to be able to prevent most waste as well as increase recycling and reuse. By working in the cross section between the objectives of the waste hierarchy and the innovation power of circular economy and circular business models, the ability to solve multiple problems such as environment issues, quality of waste, social issues and climate, will increase. The objective of the future Life IP is to create a solid foundation for reaching the ambitious target that no products become waste.
