Citifon was awarded a national license to operate Malaysia's third pay-phone network in 1995. The company was set up June 1994 as a partnership of Telekom Malaysia Berhad's wholly-owned subsidiary, Payphone (30%) and three local private companies: Metro Perkasa (40%), Tabung Haji (20%), and Pesumals (10%). Citifon began commercial services in 1995 when it installed more than 4,000 microchip card phones. In 1997, the company awarded a contract worth around US$8.6 million (FFr50 million) to Ascom Monetel (France), subsidiary of Ascom (Switzerland), for the supply of 10,000 GNT507 multi-payment payphones and 4 PMS150 regional management systems. In April 1999, majority state-owned Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TMB) entered into a conditional agreement to buy the 70% stake in the company that it did not already own, making Citifon a wholly-owned subsidiary. At the time, the company owned 20,000 pay phones across the nation.
