The general objective of this Operation is to contribute to crime and violence reduction in 28 high crime urban communities through the financing of prevention and strategic interventions to address identified individual, family and community risk factors. Twenty-six targeted communities participated in the first stage of the Programme and will continue participating in the second stage. Community selection criteria are: (i) severity and variance of crime and violence; (ii) population; (iii) socio economic conditions; (iv) community assets and collaboration opportunities, including other government agencies; and (v) community willingness to participate. The specific objectives are: (i) reducing levels of homicide, major crimes (robbery, burglary and larceny) and interpersonal violence related injuries; and (ii) increasing the perception of safety.
