Description

Description

The Material Recovery Centre Expansion Project - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan supports the City of Saskatoon’s goal to divert 70% of waste from its landfill by enhancing infrastructure and services at the recently opened Material Recovery Centre (MRC). The project includes planning and capital construction of a permanent Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility, a bulky item drop-off area, and a residential yard waste collection point. Program development will expand material acceptance for construction and demolition waste, bulky waste, and HHW, supported by capital investments in a shredder, excavator, roll-off bins, and trucks. These upgrades will improve landfill airspace efficiency, reduce illegal dumping, and enable new recycling programs such as mattress recovery. The expanded MRC will divert an estimated 4-12% of the City’s waste, saving over 13,000 m³ of landfill space annually and adding capacity for 23,500 households per year. The outcome is a cleaner community, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, deferred landfill replacement costs, and secured infrastructure to support future housing development in Saskatoon.
