The City of Saskatoon - Bus Rapid Transit - Fleet project will acquire new accessible, battery electric, diesel and other zero emission technology buses to replace vehicles from Saskatoon’s fleet that are at or beyond their asset lifespan. Through the detailed design process, a review is planned to determine the best combination for Saskatoon’s fleet which needs to also consider infrastructure requirements to house, maintain, and charge the new acquisitions. This project is currently planning the acquisition of twenty five 40-foot battery electric buses (including chargers) and twenty articulated 60-foot diesel buses, and ten 40-foot diesel buses between 2023 and 2028. These buses will all be of low floor design, fully accessible, accommodate an increased number of mobility devices, driver barriers, and smart fare collection. The diesel buses will be equipped with the cleanest diesel engines available at the time. Both diesel and battery electric buses are estimated to have a useful life of 15 years.
