City of Yorkton - Logan Green Pathway
Sector: Solar • Location: Saskatchewan, Canada
Source: Infrastructure Canada
This project will retrofit and upgrade an existing granular pathway, which is part of the active transportation network, to asphalt by removing the granular and organic material and re-building the pathway to provide an asphalt surface. Solar lights will be placed every 35 meters to ensure public safety and comfort using the pathway, especially in the winter months, when it is dark before the work

Description
Description | This project will retrofit and upgrade an existing granular pathway, which is part of the active transportation network, to asphalt by removing the granular and organic material and re-building the pathway to provide an asphalt surface. Solar lights will be placed every 35 meters to ensure public safety and comfort using the pathway, especially in the winter months, when it is dark before the workday ends. The pathway is part of the City’s Active Transportation Network which provides residents an opportunity to choose self-powered transportation to access services in our downtown. This pathway will also provide a connection to community soccer fields, community gardens, a memorial tree park, a cemetery as well as other recreational pathways. Pathways had become an important aspect in the community prior to Covid, but have become even more important during the pandemic as people look for ways to stay active and healthy outdoors. Further, the community is a winter city, experiencing cold weather for 6 months or more each year. An extension of the pathway connectivity has been added to a parking location from the Laurier connection to the Dulmage Drive parking lots and include a paved pathway and solar lights. The early setting sun (as early as 4:30) also makes it difficult to encourage people to be active outside. Providing hard surface pathways allows for simpler snow clearing in the winter months and a well-lit pathway will encourage people to get out and stay active when it is too easy to choose staying in their house. Hard surface pathways support different modes of human powered wheeled active transportation options such as roller blades, wheelchairs, skateboards and strollers and provides low cost or no-cost options for people to choose to be active and stay healthy and stay connected. |
