Demographic changes and megatrends put the authorities responsible for public spaces under pressure. How should public spaces be managed in the future so that people both enjoy being there as well as feeling safe when they are there? How must residential districts be constructed, equipped and maintained so that people can enjoy happy lives in a community longer than ever before. How can a citizen assume a responsible role, and how can one encourage his enthusiasm and promote more self-reliance. While communities and housing development companies in the Netherlands and in Germany are facing these and other issues, they are confronted with continually growing challenges and demands on their services. Both countries are forced to admit that they have reached a limit to conventional methods. This requires time, cross-border and in cooperation, exchanging experiences and combining strengths and knowledge, in order to test promising measures in practical field trials, to evaluate them jointly and to publish them in an innovative strategy handbook from which other regions can also profit. The cross-border approach makes possible a multi-cultural approach: What are our strengths and what can we learn from our neighbors? What impact do our cultural differences have upon public spaces? Questions which can only be answered by means of a cross-border approach.
