Description
Description | The Clean Air Champions League project combines the universal appeal of football with the critical environmental challenge of air pollution, embodying an innovative approach to raising awareness and fostering community action towards cleaner air across Europe. At its core, the project aims to utilise the influence of football, particularly among communities who are not actively participating in environmental issues, to engage a wide audience in air quality initiatives, leveraging the sport's infrastructure, fan base, and community ties to promote environmental sustainability and health. The project strategically situates air quality monitoring stations near football stadiums to gather crucial data, sparking awareness and action. It aims to not only collect environmental data but also turn football venues into hubs for environmental education and action. By engaging fans in decision-making and educational programs, it fosters community-driven action for better air quality. The introduction of a league system where football clubs compete based on local air quality records is a novel approach that incentivises environmental engagement and fosters a healthy rivalry among clubs. This competitive element is designed to increase the engagement of football organizations and their communities in air quality improvement efforts, contributing to the broader goals of the European Green Deal for a greener. The project consortium, consisting of sustainability experts, football clubs, and associations, uniquely leverages fan mobilisation for climate action. Their existing initiatives span sustainability strategies, social responsibility projects, and circular economy efforts, addressing health and wellbeing. The project supports the Erasmus+ call by promoting equality, European values, and education through sport. It emphasises community involvement in environmental initiatives, fostering democratic engagement, social interaction, and civic responsibility. |
