Work machinery accounts for a large proportion of greenhouse gas emissions in the Scandinavian transport sector. Cleancon wants to change that. The goal is for 40 municipalities in Sweden, Norway and Denmark to design joint incentives and procurement processes to promote electric and hydrogen-powered work machines. Oslo Municipality estimates that construction machinery accounts for 25 % of greenhouse gas emissions in the transport industry. In Sweden, the corresponding share was 20 per cent in 2010 and the Swedish Transport Administration’s forecast is that this will increase to 50 per cent by 2050, if nothing is done about it. The Cleancon project wants to focus on reversing the trend, and promoting the use of work machines and vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen from renewable sources. The project wants to do this by achieving and making visible a common Scandinavian market. Through dialogue meetings and innovative forms of procurement, the project aims to harmonise incentives and procurement processes in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The idea is that a common vision and willingness to purchase and use environmentally friendly work machines will increase demand and increased access to them, when machine manufacturers notice a reduced risk in developing such machines. The project wants to work with machine manufacturers and suppliers to ensure that it is possible to meet the requirements and to encourage the industry to make an effort in this matter.
