Sewage treatment plants (RWZIs) treat waste water from households and industry and discharge it as effluent into surface water. Although effluent quality has improved, organic micropollutants (OMVs) such as drug residues, pesticides and PFAS compounds are a major problem. However, most installations are unable to sufficiently break down or remove contaminants in surface water.

Description

Description

Sewage treatment plants (RWZIs) treat waste water from households and industry and discharge it as effluent into surface water. Although effluent quality has improved, organic micropollutants (OMVs) such as drug residues, pesticides and PFAS compounds are a major problem. However, most installations are unable to sufficiently break down or remove contaminants in surface water. The importance of innovative and cost-efficient after-treatment techniques for improving the quality of surface water After research, it appears that ozonisation decontamination technique emerges as one of the most successful technologies to eliminate pollution, but it brings with it unwanted by-products such as bromate. In Granular Active Carbon (GAK) filtration, these by-products are not formed, but with GAK frequent regeneration of activated carbon is necessary, leading to high costs and a large CO² footprint. Clean watercourses want to demonstrate that ozonisation (O3) in combination with Granular Active Kool (GAK) can be used as an innovative and cost-efficient after-treatment technique to improve the quality of surface water.
