The Clearwater Project is a large infrastructure work in Los Angeles County involving the construction of an 11.2-kilometer long tunnel with a diameter of 5.5 meters, running 137 meters below neighborhoods in Wilmington, California. The tunnel is designed to replace two old tunnels transporting treated wastewater from the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant to ocean discharges near San Pedro. Construction began in late 2019, with tunneling starting in 2021 and expected completion by the end of 2025. However, a partial collapse occurred on July 10, 2025, at a depth of 137 meters, trapping 31 workers who all escaped unharmed. The project is now on indefinite hold pending investigation.
