Description
Description | The Indian rain-fed farming areas are affected by high levels of erosion. The reasons for this include overgrazing and unsustainable agricultural management. The consequences of climate change and variability, such as droughts and heavy rainfall, also contribute to soil degradation. The consequences of erosion are a significant reduction in soil fertility and a reduction in water infiltration into the soil, and thus a decrease in groundwater recharge. This leads to the loss of fertile topsoil, a decrease in agricultural productivity and a threat to food security and living conditions of the local population. The aim of the FC project Climate Adaptation and Soil Rehabilitation in Watersheds is to strengthen the adaptability of small farmers to climate change and variability by improving and sustainably using the natural resources of soil and water. The main target group is the rural population in watersheds in two federal states that are particularly vulnerable to climate change and affected by erosion. The project sponsor is the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), KfW is supporting the implementation of the program with 5 million euros. The funds come from the BMZ special initiative A World Without Hunger. |
