The project is the third component of the FC program Climate Adaptation in the Himalayas. The aim of the FC program is to introduce sustainable, climate-adapted and participatory management of natural resources in selected Indian states in the Himalayan catchment area. The focus within natural resources is on the forest sector. The target group of the FC program is the rural, often indigenous population in selected Indian states in the Himalayan catchment area, who are dependent on the use of natural resources. The project sponsor is the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA). Meghalaya is one of the states in India most affected by climate change, which poses both an economic and ecological threat to the residents of the project area. Extreme weather events such as floods and heat waves are already making it difficult to preserve natural resources, agriculture and protect biodiversity. A particular problem in the project area is the constant availability of water for the two largest cities in Meghalaya, which are located in the lower reaches of the areas. The aim of the third component of the FC program is therefore to improve the climate resilience of the ecosystems treated and the communities in the selected watersheds. The target group is the rural and largely indigenous population living in the project areas. In addition to the direct target group, the residents of the corresponding watersheds will also benefit indirectly from the project.
