Description
Description | The project makes a significant contribution to converting the city of Dhaka's water supply from groundwater to surface water. The capital's climate resilience is increased Dhaka is four meters above sea level, but is sinking by around 14 mm every year, partly due to the exploitation of groundwater resources from which the city obtains most of its drinking water (currently around 78%). This makes the city more vulnerable to sea level rise, groundwater salinization and flooding. There is also a risk that groundwater resources will come under increasing pressure due to climate-related dry periods and that the city's security of supply will deteriorate. The implementation of the project will ensure the climate-resilient drinking water supply of an estimated 7 million people (almost a third of the population of Greater Dhaka), including an estimated 1 million slum dwellers, and make an important contribution to climate-resilient urban development. The reduction in groundwater reservoirs and the associated land subsidence of the capital will be reduced. At the time of the audit, the total cost of the project was estimated at EUR 568.7 million. A European consortium consisting of AFD (EUR 115 million), DANIDA (EUR 185 million), EIB (EUR 40 million) and German FC (EUR 90 million) will finance this together with a government contribution (EUR 138.7 million). This makes it one of the largest joint financing projects in the world with exclusive European funding. |
