Description
Description | With an available water volume of 65 m3 per year per inhabitant, Jordan is already one of the most water-poor countries in the world. While water demand will increase in the coming years, a further decline in water resources is expected due to climate change. In order to ensure the human right of the Jordanian population to adequate water and sanitation in the long term, efficient use of water resources is essential. The basic prerequisite for this is the introduction and implementation of water management planning in the Jordanian water sector. Building on the results of ongoing projects by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to create a national water master plan, this module will develop a wastewater treatment concept for the cities of Amman and Zarqa and test its feasibility. The aim of the module is to make a contribution to sustainable and efficient management of scarce water resources in Jordan, derived from strategic water management and infrastructure planning. In addition to resource protection, improved planning of the wastewater infrastructure should promote essential elements of good governance and increase Jordan's ability to adapt to climate change. The module objective is to be achieved by employing an international consulting company to support the project sponsor in preparing the climate-resilient wastewater infrastructure plan. The project sponsor is the national water authority (Water Authority of Jordan), which is subordinate to the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and is already a long-standing partner of German Financial Cooperation. A grant of EUR 3 million is to be made available to finance the consulting assignment. |
