Climate Adapted Urban Development Programme in Bangladesh, Phase III

The FC module aims to improve the living conditions of the population affected by climate change and flooding in small and medium-sized cities in Bangladesh. To this end, investments in climate-adapted urban infrastructure projects are being implemented in three cities initially through the project sponsor Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). The individual investments are selected based on climate vulnerability criteria, among other things, taking into account the special needs of the poor urban population in particular. A particular focus of the individual projects carried out in cooperation with the responsible city administrations is on flood protection measures. This includes drainage channels, dyke roads and so-called blue-green infrastructure, which, via a strategically planned network of natural and near-natural areas such as ponds, parks and waterways, not only serve to increase resilience to flooding events, but also contribute to improving the quality of stay in public spaces in the project cities. The project thus contributes to strengthening urban resilience to the consequences of climate change. The estimated financing requirement for three cities is around EUR 47.7 million. The FC funding contribution amounts to EUR 31 million. A further grant of EUR 2.5 million will be used to strengthen the capacity of the participating project cities and the project sponsor in various aspects of the planning, implementation and sustainable operation of individual investments in infrastructures specifically geared towards strengthening climate resilience (cf. 2018.7020.3).
