Climate-Adapted Urban Development Programme in Bangladesh

Rapid urbanization coupled with the negative effects of climate change that are already noticeable in Bangladesh and are expected to become even more severe in the future pose major challenges for the Bangladeshi population, its municipal administrations and national authorities. This is particularly evident in the southwestern coastal lowlands. This is where the cities of Barishal, Khul-na and Satkhira are located, which have been identified as particularly vulnerable. As part of the FC program Climate-Adapted Urban Development in Bangladesh, Phase I, local climate adaptation strategies are to be further developed in the cities of Barishal and Satkhira on the basis of risk and vulnerability analyses and investments are to be made in the climate-adapted expansion of local infrastructure. The aim of the FC program (FC module objective) is the sustainable use of improved municipal services and climate-resilient infrastructure by the target group in risk zones in the cities of Barishal and Satkhira in Bangladesh. The FC measure thus contributes to reducing the vulnerability of particularly vulnerable population groups, infrastructures and economic cycles in the selected cities to the risks of climate change. The target group of the FC program is the vulnerable population living in the districts of the partner cities that are particularly threatened by the effects of climate change.
