Description
Description | As a result of climate change, the surface waters of the Simiyu region are drying up more and more frequently and for longer periods of time. Groundwater resources are insufficient to supply the population with drinking water. As a result, only around 20% of the urban and 40% of the rural population currently have safe access to drinking water. The lack of sanitation facilities leads to contamination of surface water and endangers health. Climate events in Simiyu are also becoming increasingly unpredictable. Crop failures resulting from climate fluctuations endanger the population's economic base. The project improves the living conditions of the people of Simiyu in the areas most affected by climate change, namely drinking water and sanitation, and agriculture. To this end, a climate-adapted, sustainable water supply from Lake Victoria will be built and measures for improved sanitation will be implemented. The GCF's co-financing contribution will also be used to introduce climate-adapted agricultural practices. The project aims to improve climate resilience and thus the income and development prospects of 495,000 people in the Simiyu region. Experiences from the new, cross-sectoral approach are to be incorporated into the Tanzanian government's strategies and planning processes, thus paving the way for broad-based implementation in other regions of Tanzania affected by climate change. Due to its high visibility, the project acts as a beacon for German climate partnerships. |
