Climate and environmentally friendly urban development

The project sponsor is the regional development bank CAF. The project is part of the DKTI's supported sectors (dissemination of modern technologies in the field of energy efficiency). The aim of the program is to make a significant contribution to climate- and environmentally friendly urban development in Latin America by building and expanding climate-friendly public transport systems. For this purpose, a low-interest loan of USD 155 million was issued to the Latin American development bank CAF (Corporación Andina de Fomento). The project was signed at the end of 2019. The project is aimed at Latin American developing countries and state development banks via the CAF, to which loans with reduced interest rates are made available through the program. The population at project locations that have yet to be defined is the ultimate target group. The planned development loan is intended to finance infrastructure measures in urban public transport in the countries of the regional shareholders, with care being taken to ensure that the majority of the loan funds are used in BMZ partner countries. The project contributes to climate, environmental and resource protection as well as to improving the living conditions of the population. The intended effects of the FC measure contribute to the fulfillment of the goals of the German Climate and Technology Initiative (DKTI). As part of the BMZ's Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI), which was announced at the Habitat III conference in Quito in October 2016, Germany is supporting the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. The FC project presented here makes an important contribution to TUMI. At the same time, the NDC goals are promoted in individual countries through the program.
