Climate-friendly urban mobility

India is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. At the same time, the country is characterized by continued high population growth, increasing urbanization and a disproportionately high growth in individual motorization. This is due to increasing prosperity and inadequate public transport. As one of the country's largest energy consumers, the transport sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. To counteract this trend, the Indian government has been committed for several years to expanding local public transport in medium to large cities. The proposed FC program is part of this initiative. The aim of the project is to increase and sustainably use an inclusive, climate-friendly and energy-efficient local public transport system in the selected program locations. The program thus contributes to reducing the negative climate and environmental impacts of urban transport and is in line with the goals of the DC program to improve environmental and resource protection, decouple economic growth from resource consumption and tackle the dangers of climate change. The FC program supports selected states and cities in the development of energy-efficient and sustainable mobility solutions. When selecting the program components, the focus is on maximum impact, feasibility and the integration of different modes of transport (rail, bus, motorized and non-motorized individual transport). FC investments are made in the following transport systems, among others: bus rapid transit systems, light rail train / metro, energy-efficient buses (including natural gas, electric and hybrid technologies), ferries, bicycle and pedestrian paths, park & ride facilities, intelligent traffic control systems and integrated ticketing. The investments can be flanked and secured by accompanying support (driver training, operational improvements, customer orientation). Project sponsors are public companies in the states in which the respective program component is implemented. The target group of the project is all users of local public transport. Poorer population groups without their own vehicle also benefit from improved mobility through footpaths and bicycle paths, buses and trains. The project fits into the BMZ's sector focus on sustainable urban development and responds to strong demand on the Indian side. The topic of climate-friendly urban mobility is a separate field of action in the India country strategy of December 2016. Since 2015, the follow-up phases of the Climate-Friendly Urban Mobility II, III and IV program have also been examined. Within this module, the components Integrated Water Transport Kochi, Climate-Friendly Modernization of Urban Public Transport Tamil Nadu and Integrated and Green Urban Mobility for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are financed.
