The aim of the Climate-Friendly Waste Management II project is to introduce integrated, environmentally and climate-friendly waste management systems in the Georgian regions of Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti (module objective). It is intended to make a contribution to environmental and resource protection, to the prevention of climate-damaging emissions and to the improvement of public health (development policy objective). The target group is the population living in the project regions (approx. 675,000 inhabitants). The project is a follow-up phase of the ongoing FC project Climate-Friendly Waste Management I (BMZ No. 2011 66 479) in the regions of Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi/Kvemo Svaneti. The project measures include the construction and equipment of two regional municipal waste landfills and transfer stations that meet EU standards, the supply of equipment for municipal waste services and the environmentally friendly closure of old landfills. There are also pilot projects for recycling and composting. As part of the accompanying measure, the project sponsor - the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG) - and the municipalities involved are to be strengthened institutionally and professionally, advised on how to ensure cost-efficient operation and supported in the implementation of public relations measures. The total cost of the project is EUR 35.4 million. The investment costs amount to EUR 33.4 million.
