Climate Hikes - Hiking towards a better future

The project aims at establishing the concept of CLIMATE HIKES supporting health and well-being, social inclusion, the EU Green Deal, the EU Youth Goals, and the SDGs, and to foster this approach amongst the project partners, participants, and network partners of the participating organisations by non-formal education methods. It builds upon the potential of sports and leisure organisations to promote climate friendly behaviour amongst their target groups. The concept builds a holistic framework by combining sustainable outdoor activities with awareness raising. Implementation will focus on saving CO2 emissions and on a respectful behaviour in nature. During the hikes climate change will be tackled by discussing its impacts on nature as well as regional good practice, e.g., in the field of forestry, agriculture or renewable energies. Digital storytelling will ensure a wide reach and a lasting impact. Special attention will be paid on involvement of young people with different backgrounds in all implementation steps and on reaching young people as multipliers and final recipients. The project will result in: · 40 + hiking guides, trainers, youth workers and volunteers trained in the diverse aspects of the concept · 8 + good practice hikes with about 120 participants, considering gender balance and inclusion of socially disadvantaged young people · 160 + multipliers for the concept of Climate Hikes across Europe · A guideline and training material for implementing Climate Hikes including tested innovative methods for promoting inclusive and ecologically sound hiking activities and for raising the awareness for climate issues provided free of charge to the public · Increased capacities for sustainable hiking activities within the participating organisations and beyond · Increased public awareness for hiking as nature and climate friendly outdoor activity, on the impact of climate change on European landscapes, and on the need of meeting the EU climate targets.
