Climate-resilient decentralized infrastructure

The project is an extension of the Strengthening Local Self-Government in Zambia III program (BMZ No. 2014.67.323). In Phase III and in the expansion project planned at the same time, the infrastructure measures focus equally on local climate adaptation. Selected local governments in the Southern Province provide climate-resilient public infrastructure within their legally defined area of responsibility in a sustainable manner and to the satisfaction of the population (FC module objective). This is intended to ensure that basic public services such as schools, health centers and markets are accessible when heavy rains are threatened, and to prevent large-scale flooding in residential areas of the poor population. Since the individual measures will only be finalized during the course of the program, the project is being implemented as an open program. The expansion project includes increasing the volume of measures in Phase III in the six target local authorities of Phase III as well as further measures in an additional target local authority in the Southern Province. The total cost of the expansion project is EUR 6 million in addition to the EUR 12 million of Phase III. The costs of both projects are fully financed through an FZ contribution of the same amount.
