The objectives of the Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Project: Stage II are to: 1) provide flood protection for 103 million people in the North China Plain in rural areas, several large and medium cities and major industrial centers; 2) control sediment accretion in the lower reach of the Yellow River for a period of about 20 years; 3) generate much needed hydropower; and 4) supply irrigation water (and increase the reliability of irrigation) for some 2 million hectares and ensure more stable water supplies for downstream cities and industries. The components of the projects are the following: (i) dam and structures, which include preliminary-local works, dam, inlet, outlet, power station, turbines, gates, metalwork, generators, switchyard, contract administration and consulting services; (ii) training; (iii) environmental management plan; (iii) flood, sediment, ice and drought management; (iv) institutional support for the Yellow River Conservancy Commission; and (v) institutional reform training.
