The Renewable Energy Development Project for China aims at developing sustainable markets for wind and photovoltaic (PV) technologies in order to increase supply of electricity in an environmentally sustainable way and improve access of isolated rural populations to electricity services. The project has three components, consisting of installing grid-connected windfarms in four provinces; supplying photovoltaic systems to households and institutions in remote areas of six northwestern provinces; and supporting technology upgrading to improve performance and reduce the costs of windfarms and solar PV technologies. The project is fully consistent with GEF (Global Environmental Facility) Operational Program 6, supporting the promotion of renewable energy by removing barriers and reducing implementation costs.
