International Finance Corporation (“IFC”) and Duopharm (the “Company) have entered into a Collaboration Letter Agreement to jointly conduct early-stage development activities to establish a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Senegal. Duopharm is one of the largest pharmaceutical distribution companies in Senegal. Along with a strategic technical partner, Duopharm intends to backward integrate into manufacturing and produce solid dosage forms of drugs for the Senegalese and neighboring West African markets. IFC will support the market feasibility study, selection of a strategic partner, E&S screening, and design of the technical aspects of the project. The project presents an opportunity to address the key problems facing the pharmaceutical sector in Senegal and West Africa – such as overdependency on imported drugs and the limited operational and technical manufacturing capacity of local players. This signing demonstrates IFC’s commitment to supporting private sector companies to develop resilient pharmaceutical supply chains in West Africa by increasing pharmaceutical production capabilities close to end consumers and therefore boosting pandemic preparedness.
