Description

The Project includes Phases II and III of the Chimuara-Nacala transmission system in Mozambique. It consists of the development of a 460 km network of transmission lines stretching from Alto Molocue to Nacala-a-Velha in the northeast of Mozambique, the expansion of an existing substation, and the construction of two new substations. Phases under the Project, is currently anticipated to include the following components: o Phase II: a 272km 400 kV line from Alto Molocue to Namialo o Phase III: i. a 98km 220 kV line from Nampula to Namialo ii. a 90km 220 kV line from Namialo to Nacala-a-Velha iii. the expansion of the 220/110 kV Nampula substation iv. a new 400/220/110 kV substation in Namialo v. a new 220/110 kV substation in Nacala-a-Velha Several workstreams, including Technical, Environmental and Social (E&S), Legal, Financing, and Permits and Licenses, will be required to reach Financial Close and begin construction. IFC will support key aspects of these workstreams. IFC and Gridworks are co-developing the Chimuara-Nacala transmission system, focusing on Phases II and III, as a private-sector-led Independent Transmission Project (ITP). Gridworks, the Sponsor, is a UK-based company specializing in transmission and distribution infrastructure across Africa. The Project aims to expand transmission capacity to the North-East of Mozambique. IFC’s role includes contributing up to $4 million in project development costs, providing technical input to promote Project alignment with the IFC Performance Standards, and supporting Project financing.
